CHARACTER NAME: Sonata Shinonome

LOSS: I thought about singing or making nicknames, but those are core parts of her character that would otherwise make her completely different. Instead of settled on a different one: her memories of her father. While Kanata is the one with more memories of him and Sonata never really knew him it's also shown that she still grieves for him and has some feelings about it. She never really got to know her father and shows interest in what he did. So what little memories she has important to her. While there would never be any outward signs of it unless breached, not being able to remember anything will be something she struggles with.
ABOUT THE CHARACTER:
Sonata is ten-years-old and shows it. She's hyperactive, bright, downright silly, and full of hope. She's a stark contrast from her sister Kanata who, while kind, is strict and sometimes harsh. In a distant future where entertainment has been banned and mankind has colonized the skies, Sonata and Kanata were born on Saharastar. Their father was one of the rebels who fought against the ban and was eventually killed in action by DES for it. In turn, two years prior to the start of the series, Kanata left her homeworld to join AKB0048.
At ten, Sonata applied to become a member herself. The viewer isn't given an official reason why, but it's alluded to that it's because she's trying to follow Kanata. She also really just loves to be an idol, so while Kanata is a part she's not the whole reason for the Sonata to become a member of 00. Sonata loves meeting with people, singing, and the feeling of love that she feels within the band. But despite all of her love for 00, because she was still three years too young to apply Sonata was not accepted into the auditions...
... So she becomes a stowaway on one of the ships heading towards the location. That is how we're introduced to Sonata. Another one of the girls going to the audition was passing by as security hunted Sonata down when she caught her. After her initial surprise, Sonata started going on about giving the girl her autograph since she was going to become a member of 00. Sonata is the very picture of childish bluntness and honesty. She fully believes in herself and that she will make it in as a member of 00. In fact, when she finally meets the manager instead of asking her if she could audition she simply says: "I'm Sonata. I'm going to audition."
Sonata as a person never questions herself. She doesn't care that she's the youngest person to audition for 00 or that it may be a hindrance to her. When others comment on her height or age she replies back haughtily because Sonata wants to be seen on equal ground. To Sonata she is just as capable as the others so being belittled or underestimated doesn't sit right with her. She hasn't quite reached the mentality of a teenager who becomes awkward and fumbling, and if how she behaves now is any indication she never will. After all, she is the understudy who decided to go to her handshake event dressed as a frog.
However, just because she doesn't question herself doesn't mean Sonata questions other things. Sonata has led a fairly sheltered life even with her father's death and becoming a member of 00. Most of her time with 00 was spent on Akibastor, which was their home planet and no longer following the entertainment ban. Her first understudy concert was the first time she was truly met with angry DES people and it shook her. She was absolutely terrified and wondering how people could hate them when they were about hope and love-- and she showed this fear twice more, in similar recurrences. Sonata doesn't understand people who think bad things about entertainment or even fully grasps the concept of war. All Sonata knows is that 00 is about love and she hopes that if she sings people will understand her feelings and be happy because that's always worked. And it's reallyscary when it doesn't.
Beyond that, though, there's nothing really that can get her down and she's easy to make bounce back to her feet. It's only when she's faced with pure hatred that Sonata isn't really sure what to do and has shown to yell at Makoto for being upset (but Makoto is always upset, so in a way that's moot). In essence, Sonata is a girl that thrives on happiness and seeing people smile. You could say that as 00 member that's obvious, but it's even more so with Sonata. She's never down and when someone else is down she tends to drag them around and make them do stuff with her.
She's extremely silly and in that way can be rather annoying. She likes spending time dressing as various animals, speaking in puns, nicknaming everyone she meets, and teasing them, too. She has no filter and doesn't show a single care about if she embarrasses someone. In part this is because she hasn't realized she's embarrassing them yet, but in another part Sonata just doesn't care. She likes poking fun of Makoto because she knows it will gain a reaction because the older girl is just so easy.
Not that Sonata isn't easy to mess with either, because she is. Her first day off as a 00 member was spent thinking she was legitimately going to lose her bellybutton and that Suzuku didn't care. She spent the better half of the day crying about how she didn't want to help the older girl stalk Tsubasa because she was pretty sure her belly button was important and she shouldn't lose it. So, in that way, Sonata is gullible and easy to make flail like any unknowing little kid. There's a lot she doesn't know about the world yet and despite all her attempts to be older than she is it often shows.
If there's one trait the sisters share it's that they're both determined. Seeing as she became a stowaway on a ship and simply said she was auditioning, this much is pretty obvious. In a way, it goes with the aforementioned nature of not being unsure of herself, because in every instant she's determined she also shows it. But Sonata is an underdog because of her age and in the beginning her sister thought she wouldn't make it through choreography because of this. Instead of giving in or even complaining about it, Sonata practiced hard and tried her best. She even looked dismayed when she thought she was going to be scolded for a poor performance. Later, she drags Makoto off to train after being moved by a speech by Mimori. It's easiest to say that as long as there's something Sonata wants or if she wants to proof herself she'll do her everything for it.

Sonata herself isn't exactly what you'd call extraordinary. Well, discounting the fact that she's an idol that goes around the universe singing about hope and stuff while fighting giant robots with light-sabers. Wait, what was that last part?
Okay, so in the future AKB0048 is the last idol group standing. In a world where entertainment was banned they took a former girl's singing group, trained them for combat, and basically made them terrorists. Sonata up and joined them about a year ago, so she's trained in combat with using microphone light-sabers, small flying space crafts that double as stages, and manning small mechas. And she can do this all while dancing and singing! The only object that's really portable for her is her microphone lightsaber, so she won't have any of them.
There's one more thing about Sonata. Her eyes and hair glow with hearts because of her radiance. Now, radiance is really important because it reflects the idols "souls". There are two things that make an idol glow-- radiance and dialium (the former a sort of sandlike powder). Sonata has created her own kirara so it's always with her and ready to reappear when she's most radiant. In those times she literally shines and on occasion more kirara appear. This is also how the heart highlights appear in her hair and eyes.
She also has crazy good eyesight, but that's nothing too really note.
